A Bit of History...
Cannabis users have had a bad rep since the onslaught of propaganda against the plant beginning in the early 1930's was released upon the uninformed public.
Films like Reefer Madness pushed fear upon ignorant masses causing wide-spread panic among the general public. Notable figures such as Harry Anslinger made it his life's purpose to demonize cannabis and enforce harsh penalties upon its users.
Harry J. Anslinger...
The foundations of the prohibitive legislation that's led to so many (mostly Black and Mexican) Americans to have their freedom taken away were laid by a man named Harry Anslinger. Anslinger was the first person appointed to lead the Federal Bureau of Narcotics in 1930.
His armory of misinformation influenced the dialogue surrounding cannabis to inspire fear among common citizens. As the economy was crumbling under the pressure of the Great Depression, jobs were scarce, the culture was tense, and much of this propaganda was used as a racially divisive political tool.

"Marihuana Tax Act"
Anslinger was a man obsessed and his campaigns intensified, though none of them were founded in quantifiable research or fact-based reporting.
He put his weight behind the ‘Marihuana Tax Act’ which, when enacted in 1937 by President Roosevelt, effectively imposed taxes that made cannabis and hemp far too expensive to grow, transport or, for doctors — prescribe.
His battle to destroy cannabis disproportionately targeted communities of color: most notably in Harlem — a haven for displaced southern blacks and creatives who didn’t fit into standard societal molds.
Anti-cannabis legislation is incredibly lucrative. With new policy comes the need for more police; for special task forces; for lobbyists; for prisons...
